Persons who wish to become members of the church go through a process of formation and instruction, which is referred to as the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, or OCIA. They may be either those who are baptized in another church and will be received into the Catholic Church or those who wish to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. The age of persons in the Order of Christian Initiation can range from children who are seven years of age to adult. The process involves three phases: Inquiry (when one wants to simply know more about God and the Catholic Church), Acceptance/Catechumenate (when one wants to pursue the possibility of becoming a Catholic), and Elect/Enlightenment (when one is ready to make a permanent faith commitment in the Catholic Church). Mystagogy integrates what was begun during the formation and instruction. Thus, the deeper meaning is given both to the rituals and symbols that have taken place and to the ongoing faith formation of the individual.

Sessions begin in late August and continue until late May/ early June. Instructional sessions are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM. Formational sessions begin with the First Sunday of Advent and end with the Fifth Sunday of Lent. These sessions are held weekly at the Rite of Dismissal during one of the Sunday liturgies.

If you have any questions or want to know more about the program, contact Trish West by phone 503-769-0629, or email [email protected]
